While it might be obvious that the loft insulation should ideally be topped up to provide a good insulative blanket for your home (ideally 270mm of mineral wool), it is often forgotten that the hatch itself can provide a weak link. The thermal images above show the cooler apparent temperatures of an uninsulated loft hatch. The easiest way to mitigate this is to ensure the opening is fully draught-proofed and backed with insulation. Many companies provide insulation ‘pillows’ that can easily be fitted to provide insulation continuity in the loft space. This is one of many issues we commonly come across when performing domestic thermal imaging surveys at Red Fox Thermography.
